Trip to Giethoorn

Dutch "Venice"

Story book settings are real! I have recently returned from a family adventure in Netherlands. We had the rewarding opportunity to explore a tourist "hot spot" called Giethoorn-it literally is the "Venice" of the North. Many of the Dutch people have never been, but ask an inbound tourist and they know all about this slice of serenity.

It is so peaceful, so different and has such simple beauty that it hardly seems real – gently gliding along small canals past old but pretty thatched-roof farmhouses.

There are no roads for vehicles, just canals, small watercraft and rolling grassy banks with the odd grazing dairy cow. Small bridges as far as the eye can see connect the 2 sides of the village for the permanent residents to move around freely.

Footpaths beside the canals are ideal for walking or cycling, and there’s a wide selection of cafes and restaurants.

A fun way to tour the canals of Giethoorn is to rent a WHISPER BOAT. which is an open boat equipped with a silent electric motor and is environmentally friendly as well.
You are given quite easy instructions on how to handle the engine and navigation maps of the canals. The boats have a flat bottom perfect for the shallow canals which are only about one metre deep.

This idyllic village is a must see on your next journey to Holland, be prepared to pinch yourself to be sure the surroundings are real! Don't forget your camera!
